Dry Skin in Winter

Are you prepared for winter this season? Changing one cream to another but no relief. Above that, the ingredient list filled up with chemicals can do more harm than good.

The common questions one may ask include-Am I drinking enough water? Should I intake coconut oil? Or should I change my eating habits?

If that’s the case, homeopathy is the ultimate option for you.

Why is Xeroderma Caused During Winters?

Though Xeroderma can be caused due to various reasons but in winters it occurs primarily due to cold air that causes the body to divert the blood supply to more vital organs in need.

This in turn causes the loss of skin health and nourishment causing the skin to get dry

Our skin has a protecting coating of oil secreted by oil glands. This keeps our skin hydrated and moisturized.

If this protective coating is removed for any reason, mostly in winter, the skin gets dry.It can give various  appearances in the form of e dull and flaky skin with visible fine lines and rough patches.

During winters, dry skin is the most common skin concern which I see in my patients.

They visit me concerning about their routine activities as they get affected by dry skin, associated irritation, skin inflammation, cracked skin, chapped lips, and the list goes on and on.

Then I explain to them how homeopathy is effective to treat their skin condition as it raises their own vitality to combat the same.

After doing symptoms similarity they are prescribed with right set of remedies and they are able to see significant improvements.

While using conventional treatments such as creams, lotions, sprays, etc might fetch them temporary relief,  but leave the underlying cause behind. Now when the cause is not treated, the symptom may appear again and again..

In medical terms, we call dryness as Xeroderma.

Dry skin can occur due to two different causes: Having dry skin since birth is known as  Ichthyosis and if it happens later in life it is known as Xerosis.

One of the main causes of dry skin in winters is the lack of humidity. Normally, our skin has a protective oil coating produced by the oil glands underneath. Dryness occurs when this coating gets removed. There can be various other causes which can be listed as follows

Causes of Dry Skin in Winter

Environment

Various environmental factors  such as pollution can affect the skin’s protective coating and hence cause it to  get dry.

Cold air in winters causes the body to divert the blood supply to more vital organs leaving the skin available with little nourishment. This, in turn, causes dryness.

Very low humidity during winters can also cause the skin to get dry

Harmful UV rays

UV rays can aggravate dryness of skin in winters.

Metabolic factors

Certain metabolic disorders can cause skin dryness

Harsh detergents and soaps

Chemicals and harmful ingredients in soaps and detergents can harm the protective coating of skin and can cause dryness.

Old age

In old age, the oil glands do not function to their optimum as they would have performed in younger age.

The skin of older people is more vulnerable to skin dryness.

The above causes discussed though may be present year round but can aggravate the skin dryness in winter.

Homeopathic Treatment for Dry Skin

If you take conventional treatments, you will be prescribed with remedies simply based on the common disease label.

Conventional medicines may fetch you a temporary relief but the symptoms may reappear.

With the help of natural treatments such as homeopathy, a homeopathic practitioner will first analyze your inheritance history, family history, traumas, likes, dislikes, what makes the condition worse or better, etc.

As homeopathy believes that each individual is unique, remedies are based on the unique symptomatic picture obtained after your personal analysis.

This way the remedies are able to heal the body from inside out. Rather than suppression, homeopathic treatment works on the root cause.
